“What if she doesn’t want to talk to us?” Zarina asked.

Shrugging, I said, “Then she doesn’t, but at least we’ll know.”

She shook her head, chewing on her thumbnail. “I’m nervous.”

Chuckling, I swatted her hand away from her mouth. “I can tell.”

“Let’s just get it over with,” she said, pacing across my kitchen floor.

I pulled out the paper Jayce had given me, smoothing it on the counter, and started to dial when Daphne walked in.

“Hey, what are you two doing?” she asked. Her stomach was bigger and walking was more difficult for her. She was adorable.

“Calling Korah,” Zarina said quickly. She continued to pace, making me even more nervous.

Daphne dropped her bag in the chair and rubbed her back. “Really? You’re finally going to do it?” she asked me.

Was she in pain? “Yeah,” I nodded. “Is your back ok?”

“A little sore, but I called and the nurse said it’s the extra weight I’m carrying.” She lowered herself into one of the chairs, sighing in relief.

It worried me. Was she working too much? Was it really normal? Would she let me rub her back later?

“Do it,” Zarina demanded, punching her finger on the paper over and over again. “Get it over with.”

“Do you want me to leave?” Daphne asked softly.

We both yelled no at the same time, earning a stunned look followed by a laugh. I dialed the number, my finger hovering over the call button for a few seconds before I got the nerve to do it.

It rang.

And rang.

“Hello?” a feminine voice answered.

Zarina’s eyes widened as she pointed at me repeatedly.

My mouth moved a few times before the words would come out. “Hello, is this Korah Daniels?”

“Yes it is, who is this?” she asked cautiously.

“My name is Zander McKinney and I think that we have the same father,” I blurted out, earning shocked glares from Zarina and Daphne.

Korah inhaled sharply. “Excuse me?”

“My father, I think he had an affair with your mother, and had you. I don’t talk to him, haven’t in years, but I found out a few months ago that my mom kicked him out because he’d had another child. I hired a private investigator and he determined it was more than likely you who was that child,” I explained, hoping some of it made sense to her.

Silence followed and Zarina looked at me in a panic.

“I have a sister, Zarina, and she’s here now, too,” I said lamely. This was going downhill faster than a sled on ice.

“Hi,” Zarina said timidly. I’d never seen my sister so unsure of herself.

“Hi,” Korah replied. I could hear the pain behind her words and I wondered if I did the right thing. “Why does the PI think it’s me?”

“Because he traced phone records back between your mom and my dad a few months before you were born,” I answered. “You were the only child of the three women he was sleeping with.”

Her voice quivered. “I see.”

I looked to Daphne, who smiled encouragingly, and continued. “I know this is unexpected and a lot to take in, but we would love to know if you really are our sister.
